God has led Israel into the Promised Land and done many wonderful things for them.
Now they stand at a crossroads. When Joshua dies, will they serve the Lord God, or will they go after all the other gods of the pagan nations all around them?
Joshua gathers them together and says… “choose you this day, whom you will serve”
Will you serve the idols of this land, will you serve the idols of another land? Or will you serve the One True God?
Our situation is similar to when Joshua asked the Israelites to choose who they would serve.
Will you serve the other gods, like self and the worldly culture? Will you conform to the world by trying to be popular and seeking after those things that our society loves?
Or will you purpose to bring every single thought into subjection to Jesus Christ? Will you live your life as His disciple, testing every action, every decision, against the Word of God?
Who do you serve?
Will you be like the Israelites, shouting out in the heat of the moment, ‘we will serve the Lord’? And then eventually falling by the wayside as you’re swept up in the pursuit of the things of this world.
Crowds of people followed Jesus when He was on earth. But they left Him once they saw He wasn’t the magic ticket to an easy life.
Jesus turned to the disciples and asked. “Will you leave me also?”
Joshua pleads with them; this is life and death. Don’t fool around. Either you are a believer whose life is devoted to the service of the Lord. Or you’re a pagan.
But don’t be one of those sorry losers, taking the name of our Saviour but living like you belong to the devil. That’s a disgrace.
For Joshua the answer to the question was clear…
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
Get serious about serving the Lord.
